Did you know that the pain associated with root canals comes from the infections itself?
It is true, patients who receive a root canal typically experience little to no discomfort during their treatment. Many patients even feel relief from pain after their procedure because the diseased pulp has been removed from their tooth.
Severe toothaches, prolonged tooth sensitivity or discoloration of a tooth may be indicators that you are experiencing root canal decay. Root canal infections occur when the pulp inside your tooth becomes diseased or begins to decay. This inflamed pulp is what causes the uncomfortable side effects of a root canal. Root canal decay can be extremely painful and will deteriorate your overall oral health if left untreated.
Marrero, LA dentists Drs. Maria Burmaster and Valerie Hemphill offer their skilled expertise and precise care for the treatment of tooth decay. Root canal procedures are a routine treatment that actually relieves patients from pain associated with the condition. Root canals are a preferred treatment to a tooth extraction because it helps to maintain the patient’s most natural and stable smile.
How does a root canal work?
Root Canals can be performed in one to two visits to our Marrero, LA dentist office. The treatment consists of multiple steps that are usually able to be completed in just one sitting.
- A small hole is drilled into the tooth making the tooth pulp accessible.
- Infected tissue and nerves are removed.
- The inside of the infected tooth is thoroughly cleaned and polished.
- If infection exists, antibiotics may be prescribed and the tooth may need to be temporarily sealed until the infection is gone. Patients may need to return to the dentist to have the root canal completed. Once the infection is cleared, your Barataria dentist will permanently fill and seal the tooth.
- Once clear and cleaned, the clean hollow tooth will be filled with bio-compatible rubber (gutta percha).
- The tooth is typically secured using a custom-designed dental crown to ensure a durable and long-lasting result. The dental crown protects the root canal treated tooth from future damage.
